A LEARNING DAY WITH THE CORE PROGRAM CLASS OF 2022

 

On February 24th we gathered the Core Program Class of 2022 along with over 100 local community leaders for a very special day of learning focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and allyship. 

The spectacular line-up of speakers included:

Fauzia Agbonhin

As featured in CTV, CBC, and other publications, Fauzia Agbonhin is a 19-year-old Nigerian-Canadian slam poet and author of I Never Truly Hated You. She has represented London in two national festivals. She and her London team were ranked fourth place in Canada at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word Poetry 2019. To add, Fauzia performed at the first ever BLM protest in London Ontario with over 10,000 people. Fauzia is a recipient of the 2019 Lewis Coray TrailBlazer Award from the London Police and the 2020 London Hero award from Community Living London.

Fauzia Mazhar

Executive Director of the Coalition of Muslim Women

Fauzia Mazhar earned her first BA in Economics from Pakistan. She competed a second BA in Psychology, and her Master of Social Work with specialization in Community, Policy, Planning, Organizations (CPPO), and a post graduate certificate in Leadership and Management from Wilfrid Laurier University. Fauzia is also a proud graduate of LWR’s Community Leadership program.

Fauzia has 20 years of experience in the local social profit sector, much of it in leadership and management. 

In 2010, Fauzia joined hands with a handful of women in KW to start the modest initiative to empower Muslim women to be leaders and change makers, able to address stereotypes and misconceptions about Muslim women through community outreach and bridge-building, which is now known as Coalition of Muslim Women of KW or CMW.

Ayo Owodunni

Ayo is a trained management consultant and facilitator bringing over 10 years of experience in coaching, training and strategic direction to the table. A certified Diversity & Inclusion Trainer and Life Coach with an MBA in Entrepreneurship, he is a passionate trainer who loves to mix wit, knowledge and a dose of humour to share great lessons that can lead to growth and transformation. 

Ayo co-founded the coalition of African Associations. An association that brought together 15 African associations in the region of Waterloo. Their goal is to help maximize the potential of each of these associations by working with their leadership.

Ayo is certified in Adult Education from George Brown College Toronto, with expertise in facilitation, instructional design and curriculum development. He is a member of the Institute for Performance and Learning (I4PL) and the Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC).

Becoming an Inclusive Leader with Ayo Owodunni VIDEO

Karen B.K. Chan

Karen B. K. Chan is an award-winning sex and emotional literacy educator in Toronto, Canada, with 25+ years of experience. Karen (aka BK) is dedicated to having difficult conversations that are real, transformative, and kind.

Known for her accessible style and sense of humour, BK integrates curriculum content into stories, and theory into practice. She works with individuals, groups, and organizations, and trains professionals across disciplines.

BK’s YouTube video Jam is used as a teaching resource internationally, and her chapter on the importance of creative play was part of the AASECT 2014 Book of the Year. BK's work has also appeared in Toronto Book Award finalist Any Other Way (Coach House 2017), Sexology International, the Tete-a-Tete, and Action Canada's national education manual. In 2014, BK was named "Service Provider of the Year" by Planned Parenthood of Toronto for her work in sexual health, and she was honoured in 2017 as one of 30 Chinese Canadian women of distinction in Ontario.

BK has training in Creative Facilitation, Productive Thinking, Non-Violent Communication, and is a facilitator for YES!, which hosts intensive gatherings for social changemakers worldwide. These influences, and more, shaped her favourite ways to learn and teach: through stories, metaphors, diagrams, and things that make people laugh.
