Leadership Waterloo Region Class of 2004

The opportunity to participate in the Leadership Waterloo Region program came to me at a time when I really needed it the most. I was relatively new to the area, young family, working at a job I liked and was successful at but still felt that something was missing. What was missing for me was a depth of community connection and understanding. The learning day sessions helped me build knowledge of the positives and challenges of living in this community from a diversified point of view. The day that sticks out most in my mind was the session on poverty. I found it extremely enlightening to listen to my classmates describe how they really looked around their community (work and life) and started to see how poverty was around them and they never noticed. (This was the same experience for me). This session was a game changer, I was encouraged to look up and out, recognize when I could help and encourage others to help as well.

The biggest benefit to me personally has been the network of caring compassionate people I met during my year with the program and the many years since. Many of my classmates have become friends, we have helped each other with projects and programs and personal support throughout the years.

It is hard to go out into this community and not run into someone who has taken the program or wants to take the program! What was missing for me was found through participation in Leadership Waterloo Region.
